How adults set up reading for children
Product rule: young readers are not meant to self-register from the public sign-up page. They should only get an account after an email invitation from a parent, guardian, or teacher. Until that invite flow is fully shipped, keep purchases and borrows on adult-managed logins. Each sign-in remains one email.
Target model (and what adults do now)
- Adult account: A parent, guardian, or teacher signs up with an email they control. This account tops up credits, grants access, and makes purchasing choices for readers they supervise. In the household model we are building, a recognised guardian will also be able to spend their credits to buy or grant catalog access for every informal-learning teacher linked to that same household—so those teachers are not expected to use their own credits for the students that household assigns to them (their personal purchases for themselves stay on their own login).
- Young reader accounts: The child does not sign up alone. They wait for an invitation email from their supervising adult; only that path should create their login. After sign-in, they browse the library but cannot self-serve borrows or spend credits—the adult assigns books or courses to them.
- For any login that is only for reading under supervision: on Profile, use "Child reader account" so referral and influencer programs stay off. Commercial sharing stays on the adult’s account.
Mark a login as a child reader
Open Profile while signed in as that reader and use the checkbox. Commercial reward programs stay off for that login.
Household tools (beta)
After your guardian application is approved and you declare age 20+, you can create a household from Profile → Household—even if you also use “co-learn on my device” on Profile without inviting children yet. You can invite teachers and young readers by email, share a join link, and (in the roadmap) add young readers with only a display name while others join through invitation; both kinds should carry the same entitlements inside that home.
Open HouseholdGuardian & teacher applications
After you sign in: apply to be recognised as a guardian or as a teacher/tutor. These are short review forms. You must be approved as a guardian before you can create a household (Profile → Household).
Name-first children & one family login (planned)
Target behavior: a guardian can add child placeholders with just a name, mix them with invited logins in the same household, and keep equal rights for catalog access and borrows. While everyone shares the guardian’s device, the adult confirms which child they are acting for when borrowing or learning. When a child later has their own phone or laptop, the same record can receive an email invite to become a full login. If a device is away for repair, the flow is the same—return to the guardian account and confirm the child again.
Online classroom (edu.knuamd.com) & your account
If a young reader does not yet have their own email, any course session on edu.knuamd.com is tied to the guardian’s knuamd login (your email identity). Treat your password and the 6-digit profile PIN you set on the Household page as confidential — anyone who knows them can reach Profile and change settings. Open course links while signed in as the parent when you intend to supervise.
Young reader profile & dashboard (planned)
For readers under supervision, the profile area should stay minimal—only what they need to keep reading, such as history and light recommendations—not full adult controls, credit top-up, or commercial program surfaces.
Recommendations and sharing (planned)
If a young reader wants to suggest something to someone, that should route only to their own guardian’s profile—not open public referral tools. Casual link sharing between peers should be limited to the same supervised household group, not tracked promotion outside that circle.
Email invitations, guardian–ward records in the database, and the adult flow (pick item → pick child → confirm credits → send access) are in development. Technical blocking of minor self-signup will ship with the invitation system.
